This article outlines the steps to enable Respondus Monitor on a D2L Quiz (exam).

Step 1: Create your quiz (exam) in the D2L Quiz tool

  1. Create your quiz or exam in the D2L Quiz tool. You should complete the entire quiz creation process, including grade associations, start and end dates, submission views, etc. before enabling Monitor. Please see our Quiz Setup article for more information.


Step 2: Navigate to the LockDown Browser Dashboard

  1. After your quiz has been created, navigate to the LockDown Browser dashboard from the “Manage Quizzes” page.

 

 

Step 3: Enable the LockDown Browser

  1. Click the dropdown arrow in front of the quiz name and choose “Settings.”

 

 

  1. Enable the option “Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam.”
    Note: Respondus LockDown Browser is required for Respondus Monitor.

 

  1. Determine if the LockDown Browser is also required for students to view feedback and results. This setting would could be utilized for Quiz Submission Views that are set to open after the exam end date.

 

  1. Determine if the exam requires a password to access.
    Note: This option is only recommended for live proctored exams.

 

  1. Review and enable the desired Advanced Settings:
  • Lock students into the browser until the exam is completed – When enabled, this option prevents students from exiting LockDown Browser before the exam is submitted. This option is NOT recommended outside of a proctored environment.

    When this option is NOT selected, students are able to exit the browser if their internet connection fails or there is an emergency. When exiting, students will be warned twice and asked to asked to provide a reason for exiting the exam early. This response will be available to the instructor from the LockDown Browser dashboard. Recommendation: OFF
     
  • Allow students to take this exam with an iPad (using the “LockDown Browser” app from the Apple App Store) – This option allows students to take the quiz on an iPad. Recommendation: ON
     
  • Allow students to use the LockDown Browser for Chromebook – This option allows students to take the quiz on a Chromebook. Recommendation: ON
     
  • Allow access to specific external web domains – This option allows students to navigate webpages from a specific domain if a link is provided in one of the quiz questions. Recommendation: as needed

  • Enable Calculator on the toolbar – Adds a standard or scientific calculator button to the LockDown Browser toolbar.

  • Enable Printing from the toolbar – Adds a print button to the LockDown Browser toolbar to allow printing of the current quiz screen. 

 

 

Step 4: Enable Monitor

  1. After configuring the settings for LockDown Browser, enable the Monitor extension.

 

 

  1. Choose the desired events for the Start Up Sequence. These are the steps that students will complete before starting the exam. Students will be provided instructions for completing each step. Click “Preview” for each event to see the view of the event.
    • Webcam Check – This step is required during the Startup Sequence to ensure the student webcam is functioning.

    • Additional Instructions – This step provides additional exam instructions to students. A generic message will default. Instructors can customize this message based on the specific exam requirements. Recommendation: ON (and customized)
        
    • Guidelines + Tips – This step provides students general tips for successful quiz completion. Recommendation: ON
        
    • Student Photo – This step requires students to take a webcam photo. Recommendation: ON
        
    • Show ID – This step requires students to take a webcam photo of their KU ID card. This allows instructors to compare the student identity against the student photo. Recommendation: ON
        
    • Environment Check – This step asks student to pane their workspace with the webcam to show any potential external resources in the exam environment (other individuals, books, notes, devices, etc.) Recommendation: ON
        
    • Facial Detection Check – This option is required during the Startup Sequence.

 

 

  1. Set the desired facial detection options:
    • Prevent students from starting the exam if face cannot be detected during Startup Sequence – This will not allow students to start an exam unless a face was detected during the pre-exam startup.  Recommendation: ON
        
    • Notify students during the exam if face cannot be detected (prompt for a fix) – When enabled, this option will notify students during the exam when their face cannot be detected by the webcam. This alert will occur no more than once per minute. Recommendation: ON / OFF for open book exams

 

 

  1. Review the Advanced Settings:
    • Allow another application to use the microphone during the exam – When enabled this option releases the microphone for use in other applications rather than recording ambient sound during the exam. Recommendation: OFF

    • Make webcam videos additionally available for viewing on mobile devices – Formats the videos for viewing on mobile devices, but requires additional processing time.
        
    • Enter a demo student username for use by the instructor – This feature is not available.

 

 

Step 5: Click Save + Close

After reviewing the settings for LockDown Browser and Monitor, be sure to click “Save + Close.” This will complete the setup process. After saving, be sure the dashboard indicates “Required” for both Monitor and LockDown Browser.
